State v. Federal Law – Colorado’s Growing Pains with its New Marijuana Laws.

As of January 1, 2014, marijuana use and possession has been legalized, in some form, in 26 of the 50 states.  While Virginia has no such law on the books, Colorado has taken the most progressive stance so far by legalizing recreational cannabis sales at the start of the New Year.

As with any law that changes the status quo, Colorado appears to be experiencing some growing pains trying to reconcile new state law with longstanding federal laws and employment laws.

Here is a great article by The Denver Post detailing the current conflict between employees legally using recreational marijuana and their employers.  http://www.denverpost.com/ci_24799683/employers-can-still-fire-pot-smokers-legal-use
